Happy New Year, Everyone!

2010 is shaping up to be a fun and exciting year.  Not only do we have a number of great events planned so far for this year, 2010 marks the 100th Anniversary of Scouting.  How exciting is that!  There is something for everyone to celebrate this great organization and the century of service to boys everywhere.  Below is a list of Pack events for January:

Friday, January 8 – Committee Meeting at 6:30 PM in the PPSEL cafeteria.  This is our monthly planning meeting that is open to all parents in the pack.  If you have any suggestions or ideas, this is the place to share them.  Please remember that while you are welcome to bring your children to this meeting, there are NO planned activities for them.

Saturday, January 9 – Go See It to the Western Museum of Mining and Industry (225 North Gate Blvd., Colorado Springs, CO 80921).  While this event meets a Tiger requirement, it is open to all.  They are having a members from the Colorado Mineralogical Society at the museum from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM and are inviting people to bring their rock collections to help identify the items.  This would help all scouts in meeting the Geology academic requirements.  Below is an excerpt from their website:

Family Exploration Saturday - January 9th - 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Do you have a rock collection? Bring it down to the museum this day where we will have representatives from the Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society here to help you identify what is in your collection. In addition, Richard Sweeny from the GoldCo Mine will be here to demonstrate the use of a Mini-Highbanker (recirculating sluice) along with presenting information on assay techniques and modern day assay equipment. Younger children will enjoy an exercise in Cookie Mining. Customary Admissions Apply. Members admitted Free.

Admission is $8 for adults and $4 for children. If we have more than 10 people, we can get a group discount of $1 off each admission.  We will be there at 10:00 AM.  Please RSVP if you plan on attending so that we can get a head count.  If you can’t make it at 10:00, you can go and explore the museum on your own and still work on the Geology academic requirements.

Friday, January 29 – Pack Meeting/Winter Court of Honor at 6:30 PM in the PPSEL cafeteria.  This meeting will focus on recognizing the achievements of the scouts.  If your child has completed any rank advancement, sports or academic requirements, or other achievements, please let us know so that we may celebrate them with you.  IMPORTANT:  All award/advancements MUST be reported to your den leaders so that they may submit them by the Sunday, January 24th 4:00 PM deadline.  Any advancements submitted AFTER that will be held until the February pack meeting – no exceptions.  I would love to see EVERY boy receive something at this pack meeting, so please work on this.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at (719) 232-4334 or talk to your den leader during one of the den meetings.

I know that there are a number of den activities scheduled for January as well.  If you have any questions, please go to our website, www.MyCubScout.com, and contact your den leader.

Enjoy all that scouting has to offer in this year of celebration!
